@selaroma1 Did you know when this song came out, that most of the radio stations wouldn’t play it? Not because it was bad or anything like that, but because the song didn’t fit Ray Stevens’ genre of goof-ball tunes. They figured it wouldn’t have a chance. But as you noted, it ended up becoming the best-recognized and enduring song of his quite long career.
After a decade like The 60′s, I can see why a tune like this would be number one on The Billboard Pop Charts. Of course, people these days would say it’s either politically incorrect or sappy one of the two. For me, not bad, but I don’t necessarily think it’s number one material, but that’s just me.
@weirdguy75 Well, you got the weird part of your name right. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a Christian message. And yes, we can be real and co-exist with people of different backgrounds and color peacefully!
My grandfather gave me this video collection (VHS) years ago and I still find myself humming and singing this song out of the blue, it makes me smile:)
I have ray stevens vhs tapes and cds I think they are absoutley wonderful,people are so stuck on their own self,if it isnt shoot em up or blown each other up they think it isnt any good.GO RAY KEEPEM COMING.
@SOJ721 Cripes, I’m 42 and I remember hearing this playing on the radio in my parent’s car one starry winter night when I was 5 or 6 years old. I guess some songs are timeless, huh?
@weirdguy75
And yet here you are criticizing it.
I got an idea, how about just enjoy the message, or be on your way, and let us happy people enjoy ourselves.
Just can’t understand whay some people have to be so intolerant.
Thank you Capt BuzzKill
This may have been true once upon a time… but last night in my city a teen was waiting on a bus and somebody drove by and shot him! Everybody’s beautiful in their own way? Yo, I don’t think so! Not anymore anyway

Born Harold Ray Ragsdale. Billboard’s 274th #1 hit of the rock era. God bless, brother Ray!
